Dentist making a same-day crown

If you need a dental crown, the traditional process can be lengthy, involving multiple visits and waiting periods. However, with advancements in dental technology, same-day crowns offer a quicker and more convenient option. But just how long does it take to make a same-day crown? Continue reading to learn the process of same-day crowns and find a timeline for your care.

What Makes a Same-Day Crown Different?

As the name implies, a same-day crown is a restoration that is designed, created, and placed in a single visit. This innovative technology uses computer-aided design and manufacturing to produce a custom “CEREC” crown right in your dentist’s office! This eliminates the need for temporary crowns and drastically reduces your treatment time.

What Is the Process for a Same-Day Crown?

While the method for delivering your restoration is different, the steps involved in your CEREC crown treatment are the same.

Consultation and Digital Impressions

It begins with a consultation and oral exam with your dentist. They’ll then clean and shape the affected tooth and create a model of your mouth. This is often accomplished with a digital imaging system that creates a file for the CEREC machine. The entirety of this first step takes around 90 minutes, but this could vary based on the complexity of your case.

Digital Design

Next, your dentist uses specialized software to design your crown. This allows them to customize the restoration to fit your mouth perfectly, ensuring excellent function and appearance. Designing the crown usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes.

Milling the Crown

After the design is finalized, it’s sent to a milling machine that carves the crown out of a block of ceramic material. This process typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes. The result is a durable, custom-fitted crown that matches the shape and color of your natural teeth!

Fitting and Bonding

Finally, once the crown is milled, your dentist will check the fit and make any minor adjustments. Once the crown is fitted, it’s polished and bonded to your tooth using a strong dental adhesive. Lastly, your dentist will ensure that your bite is correct and that the crown feels comfortable in your mouth. This final fitting and bonding process usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

So, if you need a crown quickly for an upcoming event, a same-day restoration could be the perfect solution. With this advanced technology, you can enjoy the convenience of a quick fix for damaged teeth!
