How Does Dental Insurance Work?
It’s important to distinguish dental insurance from medical insurance because many people tend to assume that they work in the same way. However, medical insurance is largely intended to cover more serious injuries and illnesses, while dental insurance is meant to be used regularly on preventive forms of care. It’s one of the reasons why dental insurance covers essential services like exams, cleanings, and X-rays the most. With that said, you can expect different levels of coverage depending on the type of service you choose.
What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?
Most dental insurance plans follow a coverage structure that looks like the following:
- Preventive Services – This refers to routine dental services like exams, cleanings, X-rays, and sometimes fluoride therapy. Insurance usually covers close to or 100% of the costs.
- Minor Restorative Services – Services like these include dental fillings and sometimes root canal therapy. Generally, insurance covers between 70% and 80% of costs.
- Major Restorative Services – If you are in need of dental crowns, bridges, or dentures, you’ll likely receive up to 50% coverage from insurance.
